How long will it take to get good?
Hey Guys! It’s me Enrique. There’s one question that a lot, and I mean a LOT, of my followers keep asking me. It is “How long will it take to be good at art?”. So, today I’m going to talk to you guys about how long it took me. I can’t really say that it’s the same for everyone, but I’m going to talk about my experience.
I discussed this topic a few years back as well, but, I thought I’ll give it another go. There’s a video on the same topic in my YouTube channel – Easy Things to Draw 101. You can check it out here. I think this one’s a lot better than the one I did earlier.
So, how long does it take?
I started art school when I was eighteen. And it took me about two years to get good at art. I have mentioned it before, in another topic, that I never drew as a kid. It’s not as if I had any former training from my childhood. I started drawing from age eighteen.
Why it took me so less time
When people see my art from when I began, and when I draw now, they can’t believe I got good at art so quickly. Many of my friends told me it’s because I was always inclined towards art. But I dont think that’s true. I think it’s because I really worked towards getting good.
Practice makes perfect
The difference between someone who practices, and someone who doesn’t is very evident in their work. I think, if you want to get good at art, you need to practice, at least five times a week. That’s what I do. I practiced, and practiced, till I got good.
One of my friends has been learning to draw since about four years now. She only practices once a week, like a hobby. That’s why she hasn’t got as good yet.
Factors that made me get good at art
One thing that I always tell people who ask me how long does it take to get good at art, is that there are several factors to consider. I was at a school, learning how to draw. I had time, I had mentors, I had no jobs to worry about.
All I did was draw. There was no academia, no other subjects to preoccupy me. I had zero social life, no distractions, and then it took me two years. And I’m a pretty slow learner. In my opinion, if you are training to draw, it should take you about two to three years to get good.
How to get good at art?
If you really want to get good at art, you need to dedicate your time to pursuing your goal. Watch online tutorials, videos, and read about art. I believe that you can get good at art in about three to fours years.
What do you guys think? How long do you think it takes to get good at art? Let me know in the comments section of my video. I’d love to hear from you.
. Don’t forget our artist pencil case. So when I need to think fast, I keep my pencils strapped to my sketchbook using the arm-adillo. So check out the draw artist bag. It is perfectly designed for out and about drawing, for art on the go below. -Thanks
